How exposed aggregate is made

Exposed aggregate is concrete with decorative stone mixed through it. After the pour, the stone is brought to the surface and the top layer of cement is removed to reveal it.

• 1. Mix selection

  We choose an aggregate blend for the colour, size and texture you want, matched to your home.

• 2. Pour and place

  Concrete is poured over a compacted, reinforced base, levelled, and the stone worked evenly to the surface.

• 3. Surface retarder

  A retarder slows the top few millimetres from setting while the concrete below cures normally.

• 4. Wash and expose

  At exactly the right moment the surface is washed back to reveal the stone. Too early or too late and the finish suffers — this is where experience counts.

• 5. Cut and seal

  Control joints are cut to manage cracking, then the surface is cleaned and sealed.

Caring for exposed aggregate

Exposed aggregate is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Hose or pressure-wash it to remove dirt, avoid acids and bleach which can damage the surface, and reseal every few years to protect it from moisture, stains and UV. If a crack ever appears, get it looked at early — we can advise on repairs.
